Hempfield Foundation seeks student representatives

TheHempfield Foundation recently announced that it is accepting applications for its new student representative program. Through the program, rising juniors and seniors at Hempfield High School will become involved with the nonprofit’s board of directors, offering their perspective during meetings and learning about how the Hempfield Foundation operates behind the scenes. Applications may be acquired by emailing hempfieldfoundation@gmail.com, and the deadline to apply is Thursday, Aug. 31.

Student applicants must be a junior or senior at the start of the 2023-24 school year and must be enrolled at Hempfield High School. The Hempfield Foundation is looking for students who can commit to at least one full school year of service, which will begin on the day of its

board meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Student representatives will be expected to attend the subsequent board meetings, which are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 8 a.m. The foundation encourages students with a desire to participate in other board events to apply. Additional events include fundraisers and community service projects.

As representatives on the board, students will have a chance to offer their perspective as it relates to the Hempfield Foundation’s projects. The majority of the foundation’s work is directed in two ways: grants for school faculty members and scholarships for graduating seniors. The organization offers grants to allow teachers to fund enrichment projects and programs that may not be covered by the school district’s budget.

Beyond venture grants and senior scholarships, the Hempfield Foundation also supports a variety

When Kiba Cedeno was born in January 2015, the lives of his family members would never be the same. Kiba was born with a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that causes the loss of the majority of skin and muscle on his legs, as well as other patches on his body. “When he was born, the doctor said, ‘I hope this isn’t what I think it is,’” said Kiba’s grandmother Dana Cedeno. “It was, and it turned our whole world upside down.”

Kiba’s family learned that he was born with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a condition they had never

heard of before. There is no cure for EB; the primary treatment entails wound care and pain management.

As Kiba’s family members worked to manage his condition, they realized that there was very little awareness of EB. Few organizations exist that assist families who are affected by the disease.

Kiba’s family decided to create Kisses for EB, a nonprofit organization dedicated to informing the public about EB and supporting families that have children who were born with the disease. The family operates the nonprofit from its residence in Conestoga. There are multiple variations of See Kisses for EB pg 2

On July 23, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened two new exhibits: the membership show in the Kauffman Gallery and a showcase from photographer Mia Curran in the Steinmetz Gallery. Both exhibits will remain on display through Thursday, Aug. 24, during LCAA’s regular hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

The membership show, titled “Summer Breeze,” highlights work from LCAA’s members that revolves around a summer theme. Each

EB, but they all share many of the primary symptoms. In the United States, over 200 children are born with the condition every year. It is estimated that 25,000 people in the U.S. currently live with EB. Children with EB are often referred to as “butterfly children,” due to their skin being as fragile as a butterfly’s wings.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Kisses for EB regularly hosts fundraisers throughout Lancaster County, which it uses to help families across the country in a variety of ways. The nonprofit’s efforts have included covering travel costs for trips to the hospital and mailing gift cards to families that have lost a loved one to EB. In the past, the organization has sent Christmas gifts to a child with EB who was admitted to the hospital over the holiday.

One of Kisses for EB’s primary goals when fundraising

is to grant families an opportunity to attend a biennial conference hosted by debra, an international charity dedicated to researching a cure for EB. In 2022, Kisses for EB raised enough money to send 10 families to the conference in Denver, Colo. During the conference, families attend a variety of breakout sessions that discuss topics such as new drug trials for EB treatment, methods of managing the condition and gadgets that can improve patients’ quality of life. At the 2022 conference, Kisses for EB gave out gift cards to families in attendance.

Kisses for EB is currently fundraising with the goal of sending 20 families to the next debra conference, which will be held in July 2024 in Georgia. Since the organization is not large enough to qualify for the yearly Extra-

Give event in Lancaster, it coordinates several smaller fundraisers such as a 5K race in the spring and a giveaway drawing in the fall.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, Kisses for EB will host a benefit motorcycle and car ride through the Southern End. The ride will begin at Refton Fire Company, 99 Church St.,

Refton. Registration will start at 8 a.m., followed by the ride at 10 a.m. Riders will return to the fire hall by 12:30 p.m. for food and prize drawings, and those who do not wish to participate in the ride itself are still invited to attend. of small service projects that arise within the community. In recent years, the nonprofit assisted Hempfield High School’s Student Council with creating an emergency fund to assist families in the district affected by a catastrophe. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hempfield Foundation partnered with the school district to provide yard signs for each family with a graduating senior. “When we think about the work we do, we know that

having students’ perspective would be really helpful,” said Scott Bishop, executive director of the foundation. “As a district, we have tremendous kids with different experiences and budding leadership skills, making this program a no-brainer.”

The Hempfield Foundation first considered introducing students to its board over a year ago, but class schedules prevented it from launching the program. However, the high school now offers more opportunities for its students modify their schedules through dual enrollment and senior option, which allows students to participate in extracurriculars during the school day. With the scheduling obstacle removed, the Hempfield Foundation decided to finally pilot the student representative program.

“Understanding the work that faculty and staff put into what they do is super important,” Bishop said. “Students will not only get to see outside-of-the-box thinking firsthand, they will also see the mechanics of how a foundation runs.”

The work featured in “Summer Breeze” will be

judged in the professional and nonprofessional categories, and awards will be given out for first, second and third places, as well as an honorable mention.

In the Steinmetz Gallery, Mia Curran is showcasing her photography in an exhibit titled “The Essence of Nature.” Through her featured work, Curran seeks to capture the unseen characteristics of gardens, flowers and nature. Although the show primarily features her photography, the pictures will be accompanied by various floral arrangements, which Curran crafted by hand. “My goal was to bring out what the average person might not see when walking through a garden,” Curran said. “There’s a whole world there that you don’t see until you get on your hands and knees and really look.”

CHALC honors homeschool graduates

The Coalition of Homeschoolers Across Lancaster County (CHALC) honored 59 homeschool seniors during its 28th annual graduation ceremony on May 26.

The ceremony was held at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church and included music performances by members of the senior class, a commencement speech from the keynote speaker, a video collage of the graduates, graduation speeches from two senior students and the awarding of diplomas by parents.

The keynote address was given by John Blowers, an executive and leader in the small business, nonprofit and local
