Fans Lose It as Hatsune Miku Makes Long-Awaited Debut at Coachella This Year

The digital Japanese popstar was supposed to take the stage in 2020, but then the pandemic happened.

The lineup for music festival Coachella has been announced, and in 2024, the roster is looking stacked. We've got Doja Cat, Tyler, The Creator, and Lana Del Rey headlining the main stages in performances that will span two weekends in April. Beyond that, Coachella will feature a long list of popular acts that have been tearing up the charts lately, such as Sabrina Carpenter and Peso Pluma. But perhaps the most righteous inclusion has to be blue-haired vocaloid popstar Hatsune Miku, who has never graced the Coachella stage before.

As Crunchyroll notes, the bubbly digital singer was initially slated to perform at Coachella back in 2020, but the pandemic threw a wrench into those plans. Four years later, Miku will finally debut at Coachella - and fans are elated. Coachella is one of the most visible music festivals in the world, so Hatsune Miku's holographic performance is a landmark occasion.

Some fans say that they're buying a ticket, which are famously expensive, just to see Hatsune Miku at Coachella. Most fans are awash with excitement, which they can only express in GIFs and funny clips.

Hatsune Miku was created in 2007, and is modelled after voice actress Saki Fujita. Beyond her eternal teenage appearance, the singer is best known for doubling as software that fans use to make her sing text commands.

The timing, as pointed out by Rolling Stone, appears to coincide with a push for more international acts at the festival. The lineup is particularly flush with K-Pop and Latin American artists, like Le Sserafim and Young Miko, and K-Pop sensation Blackpink was one of the headliners last year.

More Hatsune Miku?

Now the question is, will we finally see Hatsune Miku become a playable character in Fortnite? The question may seem strange, but "Hatsune Miku in Fortnite" has been an ongoing meme within the community. Part of it is earnest, because people really do want to see Hatsune Miku in the game. But it's also become a joke that highlights just how absurd Fornite collaborations have become. Every so often, someone will Photoshop a strange assortment of characters in the Fortnite lobby that, while ridiculous on paper, ends up becoming true.

The timing for such a crossover seems ripe. In 2023, the battle royale game threw its own version of Coachella within Epic Game's ever-changing island, an event that came packed with new skins, items, locations, mini-games, and more. We've already seen a Hatsune Miku collaboration with Fall Guys, which Epic Games publishes. Fortnite also recently released a rhythmn game mode developed by the creators of Rock Band.

For now, though, fans who want to enjoy watching Miku IRL can get ready for the Coachella ticket presale on January 19.
